I recently purchased a 2008 4dr JK Sahara. It was sort of an impulse buy due to a promotion. Now that I have been doing some reading, it seems that the rubicon would have been a better purchase. Being a off road beginner, I was under the impression that the Rubicon was more of a "rock climbing" model, and that if you weren't going that route, the X or Sahara was just fine. That combined with the "aesthetics" of the Sahara such as the painted fenders and side steps leaned me toward the Sahara. Also.....i was thinking a jeep is a jeep.
Hindsight is 20/20.
So now I am looking at upgrades such as the AEV front bumper with a warn winch, then a lift kit and so on.
Can I get some advice on what I should be looking at or which route I should go to make up for the features I lost by going with the Sahara over the Rubicon?

Really all that was lost if you plan on completing a lift is the transfer case, and upgraded fromt axle. You can actually buy a set of Rubicon axles including the lockers for around $3,000, or you can also go through a company like superior and just upgrade your shafts, and get some lockers. Also if you run a Antirock off road sway bar, then you won't have to worry about the front sway bar disconect failing (as seems to be common on the Rubicon).

Never heard of such a thing... Did you actually see one fail?

There are quite a few post on other boards about the solenoid failing when people have their bar disconected. This keeps the bar from reconecting when you get off the trail, and can cause for a precarious ride home.

Mopar just announced that you can but the Rubicon axles (complete with brakes) for about 1500 per. Thats quite a good deal and even just one in the back will make a HUGE difference offroad, but since you would most likely need to change gears in the front to match, you might think about adding both axles. The swaybar is OK, but not perfect by any means. The Tcase is nice too, but the diff locks are where the most bang for the buck is to be had.

I have a 08 4 door Rubi and the swaybar has malfuctioned twice. Both times it bent the link bar. Once in Moab & once on the Rubicon.
Another must is the ProCal. After reading the instr. it took about a min: to set the toggling switches and less then 10sec: to install. The speed-o is dead on, the auto trans now shifts at proper times & is now better behaved on the road. WOW
The ProCal is a must for every JK.
