What about using a Sprinter 2.7L 5cyl diesel and automatic for a conversion in the TJ/LJ platform? It was a factory application in the Jeep Grand Cherokee in Europe before the 3.0L v-6. Every review I have read on the engine, power, and mileage by these little diesels has been really good.

Would this swap be possible...you guys would know if anyone did?

I've been dreaming of this swap for years!
I previously had a Mercedes 300D with a 3L I-5. it's about the same dimensions as a Jeep 4L engine. I now have a MB E320 CDI = 3.2L I-6, quick response time & 369 ft pds of torq! I get 34MPG on the highway averaging 70MPH much of the time.

Or the inline 5 or 6 from a Sprinter or MB car. This was done years ago in a Jeep Scrambler with a proptype Sprinter engine on Jeeptodiesel.org. There are also some folks installing the old 3L five cylinder engine in YJs & CJs.

The newer V6 version of this engine could possiblly be sourced from a rolled Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland (Bluetech V6 version of 3.2) with the trans & transfercase as a complete unit.

I love Diesels torq and MPG would be great in a Jeep.

I get asked this question once a month here in Australia. Alot of people wanting to convert they're TJ's to late model Diesel's over here......

Ideally the 3.0l V6 Merc engine from the WK series would be the best engine but availability and cost of one of those would be semi prohibitive.

Based on a few few conversion attempts the 3.0V6 grand Cherokee Diesel swap is more trouble than its worth.

The Sprinter swap is a viable option with a manual transmission

The new 3.0 is a VM, not the old Merc. and it shares the Wrangler automatic...so...

The problem with modern diesels are the electronics

Difficult, but the electronics can also be an advantage.
