I'm really liking the 5-door diesel. I like the capabilities combined with the fuel efficiency of the diesel. It's an incredible "bang for your buck" in diesels (there aren't that many diesel options to begin with).

Are there any pictures of the interior of the 5 door? I know it's just utilitarian in design, but since I'm thinking of using this as a daily driver, I have to somehow convince the wife that it's the perfect all-around car that can fit a child seat in.

I guess my question is if the j8 would be a dumb idea as a daily driver for a guy with a family?

Its the same as a 4dr, delete the second door....

I have a 2005 LJ and it works just fine with the family, we do have a second family car which helps.

Not sure what you mean, Jason. You have the option of a 3 door or five door, and he's talking about the five door.

I believe the interior differences are that it doesn't come with a stereo and there may not be carpet standard. That said, I'm quite sure AEV will set you up with just about whatever you want to pay for, ultimately. I see zero reason why this couldn't be a daily driver for a family if you get the five door model.

I'm planning on getting a 5 door diesel J8 to replace my wife's current 5 door Hemi JK. It's not her DD, but she drives it a lot and we have two kids. We have the ability to garage it, so for the summer we remove the top and doors and it still gets used quite a bit.

I think for ours we'll ask that the tub get rhinolined and carpet put in on top of it...that helped a lot with sound (and heat) in my Hemi Brute. Will definitely get a nav unit, too.

Come on, send in the application! We still need more folks to make this thing happen at all!

What I was saying is I have a LJ (2 door) which is the same as a J8 2dr roughly and it works with my family. A 4dr is better of coarse!

Whats up with the J8's? Its been a quiet subject lately

**EDIT** I must have been drinking too much last night....the 5 door J8 is the same as a 5 door JK as far as comfort and ride. Minus carpet and wastefull trim.....

AEV is using the JK seats on the J8, so the rear of the 5 door is almost the same as the JK. I know that there are battery boxes in the back somewhere, but I don't know if they are being placed under the seat (probably not since all that space collapses when the seats are folded) or in the rear storage area.

The economy has probably got alot to do with it.Also, for ME the J8 doesnt offer anything over a JK that im interested in other then the stronger frame. Now if we could get knock down kits of JKs,that would be great. Not having to buy for a motor and trans that you wouldnt use and other items would be great.

My big thing is that it's a path of least resistance to a diesel JK, assuming it ever actually happens. The extras are nice, and I'll likely be putting back all the stuff removed (and then some), but it's the diesel I really want.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I've been reading around that the diesel is not street legal because it cannot pass emissions. Is this true? If it is, that would be unfortunate because the only other "similar" diesels are from bmw, audi, mercedes, volkswagen, and volvo. IMHO it's too much money to spend for leather seats and electronic seats.

I'd just rather spend the money on performance out the factory, because "comfort" can be added much easier than performance.

It depends on the state. I doubt it would be the regulations of the stricter states, while other states have no emission regulations.

It depends on the state. I doubt it would be the regulations of the stricter states, while other states have no emission regulations.

There are 4 states that adopted CA Emission regs. Those 5 are the toughest against diesels.
However, these engines (VM) are most likely to soon be replaced by small Cummins and Fiat diesels that will be 50 state legal.
That makes it very hard to plan and makes manufacturing with the VM risky, yet in just a few years you will see 50 state legal diesels starting to make their way into Jeeps.
In 2016 ALL states will adopt CA regulations
