I noticed the note about the new snorkel in Overland Journal (awesome magazine btw, glad to see you supporting it!) What is the timeframe for the release of this product and any pricing information? Can you guys post any additional pics? I think this one will be a hit! Along with that pop top tent if you ever release it! I know I would be first in line.

We're still waiting for the parts to be fully in stock before making the "official" announcement, but its tough getting the timing right while trying to give the magazines three months notice. We'll be making the announcement sometime next week or the week after with all the details, but for now here are a few key items of note:
Utilizes the vent cutout in the AEV hood, taking a nostalgic cue from the Jeep M38A1 (Google it for those who don't know what it is) deep water fording kit. for a no drill - no cut installation.
If you don't have the AEV hood, the kit comes with a trim ring and template for cutting the stock OE hood.
Comes with either a traditional "Air Ram" with an integral water separator or with the cyclonic pre-filter (shown) which is awesome for dusty dirty desert use.
Plugs directly into the factory airbox, easily removable if used with the AEV hood.
Works on RHD, LHD, 3.8 or 2.8 CRD.
Pricing should somewhere in the neighborhood of $300.

I have to say besides the very trick installation I am most impressed with the fact that it works for the 2.8 diesel. I am sure this is to extend to overseas markets....but gives me hope for future JK models

I am excited about the no cutting instalation if you run the AEV hood.
Just out of curiosity where is that that you were wheeling? Just curious because I enjoy wheeling when I am in Montana to see fire towers.

A kit with both -- so we can change depending on the environment -- would be nice too. :-)
Also... Some of us have roof racks... I myself have the Garvin. It mounts quite flush, but if the snorkel is too molded to the windshield contour, then we won't be able to use this snorkel. Let me see if I have a picture of the Garvin mount... Here's one I took while I was installing the rack...

I think it will be OK with the rack, you may have to mod the one Rack Bracket a little but shouldn't be a big deal.

Also, we've been getting a bunch of emails about how the snorkel ducts. The photo above should make it more clear. Just unclip the factory "snorkel" and plug the AEV one in. One seam to seal, very easy. The snorkel just plugs into the stock box with no modifications.

That's what I call a very elegant design. How will the snorkel be held in place? Will there be any drilling required?

No drilling, uses existing bolts.

Dave,
Thanks for the pricing information and the pictures. What an extremely well thought out design and I love the fact that it comes with a cyclonic filter! I'm sure you will sell a bunch of these once the word gets out, and hopefully it will push a bunch of hood sells for you guys too. I know that I would end up doing both just because of the ease of install. Thanks again for putting out such quality parts for the Jeep aftermarket. Now, if we can only get that camper top and somehow pressure Jeep into producing the Diesel stateside and it will be the ultimate expedition orientated vehicle. All of those guys holding on to their 80 series cruisers would have to step up, lol.

I have always thought of cutting my hood to mount a snorkel on the LJ. This seems very well designed.
AEV, any plans on make a unit for your TJ/Brute line? Since I already had you build my 2006 Unlimited, I'd be more than happy to model a new snorkel.

I'd really like to get the ram air AND the pre-filter top pieces. Some of us have plans to travel in a variety of environments -- the ram air scoop is good for just about everything, but in desert type conditions, the pre-filter would be nice. Is there a possibility for a 'deluxe' kit with both?
Thanks,

I personally can't wait to get my hands on one. I have been wondering what I would spend the $200 I have saved on... and at this point, it looks like it'll be the snorkel.
I have seen a couple others, and I honestly thought that a design running along the fender and flare would be more efficient.... and once again, AEV shows it was right. The only bad part... I dont want to hack my hood. :(
guess I either have to come up with the money for the hood or break out the jigsaw.
(not that i dont like the hood.... i'm just a poor cop with a family)

So on the cut out kit for jeeps without the AEV hood will it be just a hole or will it come with a pop in cover for if you take the snorkel off??? That would be nice if it did. Just a thought. (hint hint:D)

I saw the JK Snorkel this past weekend at the AEV Michigan location as they were getting things ready for Moab, and this thing is even sweeter in person.
If you have an AEV Hood on your JK, there is no reason to not have one of these.

I don't have an AEV hood but have no problems cutting as long as there is a template and a finishing edge to cover up the cuts.
Put me on the list I'd love one of these as soon as they're available

There is a moisture separator that allows the water to drain so it will not get into the engine.

Last I heard is around the middle of April, which I guess is today, but I would give them till next Monday. From what I heard they are just trying to package everything, and they are waiting on a few items from their suppliers. It's kinda frustrating, but I know they are doing the best they can to get these out ASAP. Seems like this is a recurring theme amongst many vendors with the newer JK products, not just AEV.

Is it coming out this week? I am really wanting it. lol.
I got a question, does anything need to be done about the axle breathers, etc to compliment the snorkel, or are the factory locations good to go for some decent fording with a snorkel?
Also do you guys do any type of maintaince after fording, and what is something bad that could happen if you dont do it(I know some prob change the diff fluid - i am new to offroad just wondering) and getting ideals what I need to do to keep my jeep running like new - I plan to keep her for a long long time
FunN4Lo
04-19-2008, 10:42 PM
You should definintly extend all your breathers. They only go up to the top of the shocks in the front and the inside of the wheel well in the rear. You should also extend the trans breather as well. I don't normally change any fluids but many people do. Just take deep crossing slow and you should be fine.
Any update on this? I've got my credit card drawn and ready.

About the breather question. You can just use some fuel line hose or some hose you get at lowes. Just make sure you secure it to the axle with a clamp or something.

Will the snorkel work with the Mopar brackets and windshield lights?
AEV Dave
04-22-2008, 01:25 PM
man you guys are quick, we just put that in the backend to work on it. The snorkel isn't ready to ship, which is why there are no links yet. I've had ross disable that link in order to avoid any confusion.
I don't think the windshield frame light mounts will work...at least not on the right side. Put them on your bumper, mounting to the windshield frame is just for looks unless you really need to see what color your hood is at night.

Just a little more patience. The dealers have been notified and most now have orders placed. In order to protect our dealers, we will not turn on our ordering till most of the dealers have received product. The last thing we want is to undermine our dealers who provide customer service or having customers dealing with backorders. That being said, we obviously under estimated initial demand and may have some minor backorders for the first few weeks. Best bet to get in on the first batch of snorkels would be: (in no particular order)
OK4WD (New Jersey)
Northridge 4X4 (Washington)
High Country 4x4 (Colorado)
Screaming Lizard (Texas)
Quadratec (Pennsylvania)

Indian Cars (Europe)

uh, maybe you misunderstood me. What I was attempting to say, is that we are trying to make it so that there won't be a backorder. Dealers have been instructed not to sell product until they have it in their warehouses. Since they were just allowed to order today, it will probably be at least two weeks until end users have them in their hands. Sorry if thats a problem. Once we open up the ordering, then contact the places above. We'll make an announcement through our website, this forum, and a newsletter.
