Could AEV given enough money, pizza, beer, a complete JK and a complete Grand Cherokee with the 3.0 CRD perform the diesel transplant in the JK platform???

Come on guys....start doing diesel swaps! Or at least tell me a diesel coming in the near future...like 2009.

Where's the cummins?

The 3.0L requires changing the steering box location, so while it can be done, its expensive and the ESP system would be affected.

We're looking forward to the 09 model year.

Cummins - check out the UAJK we built for Petersons!

Actually the 4BT (ISX) would be a sweet motor and would fit pretty well, the ISXs are really hard to find though.

Good to know about the steering box....

So good news in 09 huh :)

Thanks

I know that there has been a lot of talk about 2009 and a new 4.2 liter diesel from cummins being installed. The new CEO of Chrysler is really pushing for a ybrid or alternative fueled engine option in every vehicle offered by 2010 :), but what would you expect from a Toyota guy. I know that the 2010 Liberty is already guarunteed to get the diesel (as per a press release from Cummins about the order for parts) so I will remain optomistic about the JK.

2009 HUH??? I was thinking 2010 for some reason:D

Cough**Cough**cummins 2.8 crd...cough**cough

I would rather have the 4.2 that cummins was building. The 2.8 that was in the Liberties was not a Cummins engine, and would have required more work that is was worth. It was just better to design a whole new engine. Last I heard Cummins was already working on producing these engines in China.

I understand the 2.8 crd motor was built by VM motori...I have heard that cummins is building a like engine...160 hp/300ft tq..the JK needs nothing more

Cummins Marine has a nice little 2.8L 4cyl that makes 230hp/360ftlbs! I wonder if its cousin will make it in the JK next year. I would buy one in a heartbeat!

I doubt it will be a 2.8 liter as Cummins is designing a 4.2 liter specifically for Chrysler and it is already slated for the 2010 Liberties. It would make more sense to share the engine across platforms, and if it is being designed specifically for the Ctrysler small SUVs it would make more sense to use the same engine for as many platforms as possible. This cuts down on costs, and makes it easier for dealers to service.

I'm doubting the 4.2L is going into anything but LD pickups and maybe the bigger SUVs. It's rated at well over 400 lb-ft of torque, and weighs close to 700lbs, making it more desirable for 1/2 ton vehicles.

I have heard it will be downrated. It is already been announced in a Cummins press release that an order has been placed to put it into the Liberty for 2010, and if it is going into the Liberty it would just make sense to use the same for the JK as they share many components (tranny, transfer case, etc...)

I know all the AEV guys are sitting there laughing at all us! I'm sure you guys know exactly what is going in there.

I have no idea what engine they will put in there. The previous liberty used a 2.8L 4cyl and the overseas JK uses a 2.8L 4cyl also.

I think the 4.2 cummins might be a little overkill for the JK but its a v-6 kinda like the 3.0 and AEV stated that it doesn't fit without modifications to the steering box. I can't imagine them remaking the frame/steering system just for the diesel?

I am leaning toward a 2.8L cummins, and that engine would be just fine with me.

JeepinJon

It wouldn't sup[rise me if they are still laughing. While we are working on the various rumors floating around, they probably already have one, and are working on altering the suspension to take the extra weight. It isn't the size that required the steering / frame to be modified, as much as how the engine is designed to fit. If it was just size then these same issues would need to be adressed with the new Hemi engines, and from what I have heard they are pretty much just redoing the motor mounts, change the engine and tranny, and then plug it all in. It sounds like it is a relatively easy swap.

The 2.8l cummins is a likely choice, The 4.2v6 is heavy and has too much power for the JK/KK platforms. Who knows maybe a 2.9l Vm motori, it will be 50state by 2009;)

Here is an article from the new CEO of Chrysler. This gives a lot of hope to a diesel engine in the near future of Jeep.

http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/dodge/0612dp_new_cummins_v6_and_v8/index.html
Here is an article on the new diesel engines that Cummins is producing for Chrysler. The 4.2 liter engine is rated at 270 hp, 420 lb ft. of torque, and weighs in at 663 lbs. The placard for the Limit Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (silver Jeep Wrangler with projector headlights, and AEV front bumper) stated that it had a 4.2 liter Cummins in it at SEMA 2006, but in fact it had the 3.0 liter Bluetec engine in it. Jeep it was going to install the 4.2 liter engine when a gearbox was created that could handle the additional power ( as per http://www.trucktrend.com/autoshows/events/163_0708_moab_jeep_testing/wrangler_rubicon_unlimited_king.html). Also if you do a search for 2010 Liberty Cummins there are numerous posts, boards, and press releases regarding the 4.2 going into the Liberty. From preliminary testing on the Durango it is getting 40% better fuel efficiency, and I would love to see a Wrangler with 37” tires getting 20+ mpg.

Daves white jeep with the old 2.8 liberty diesel and auto gets around 20mpg turning 37s :D That would be SOOOOO nice.

Last I knew the 2.8 VM was dicontinued due to it being too cost ineffective to bring it up to the 2007 emission standards. Is there another 2.8 that I am missing?

My JK is the 2.8l CRD and it's got more then enough power.

What I've heared, but not sure off, is that the engine is the old VM block but completely rebuild. (I'm not sure about this)

Power is there, torque is awesome, the only point to get used to is the sound of the turbo and in fact that's a Diesel. Ok it's not my first jeep diesel (my first one was the CJ7 with the Renault Diesel in there in 81), my other jeeps wern't Diesel. I like the consumption of the CRD, Currently I'm driving at arround 10l / Diesel at 100 km, arround 23.75m a gallon. I've heared from others even driving more miles to the gallon with their Diesel version.

Are you running a lift / tires with that JK? Just wondering how that is affecting the milage.

Hi JeepinJon,

Not at the moment. That's the reason why I'm asking about AEV bringing out a lift kit. I'd rather wait and have a lift kit from AEV as they have my full confidence. Dave knows what he's doing, so I'd rather wait until they come to the market with this. So I can save for having all the goodies on my wish list :D

Lift kit, heat reduction hood, aev wheels, aev bumper front and rear and the rocker gards.

I really loves what AEV does with a jeep :D:D:D

When I was over with AEV in 2005 (picking up my girlfriends jeep and shipping it over the Europe) and had a talk with Dave, he knows and understand jeep and the people driving it.

Hey JeepYJCJ, good to hear from you. Hows Belgium?

As you can probably tell, we've grown a bit since you were here last! Check out the JK products section, I just wrote an email on the Nth line coming up. FYI, we are designing suspension applications for both RHD and LHD, Gas and Diesel. With the value of the dollar so low right now, Wranglers are getting affordable in other parts of the world for a change.

So when does the new 2009 jeep news come out this year? Is it at the autoshow in January/February?

The build sheets should be released around May 15th. Until then it is very hard to know what will be offered for 2009.

2009 could really mean 2010MY.....I can't imagine Jeep offering a option that hot until the current demand drops off a bit.

There really isn't any way to know for sure until Jeep releases a press statement, or it is on the build sheet. Until then it will just be speculation.
