I am looking to buy my first jeep and perform the Brute conversion on it. What is a better starting point, the TJ or LJ for conversion?
1. Does the LJ's extended wheelbase mean that the Brute bed will install onto the frame without having to modify the stock length?
2. Are there any significant differences in the final product? I want to start with the best option and then upgrade it ending with a very nice custom truck.

I typed up a long reply and then my computer messed up so here is the short answers...
1. No, you would still have to cut it up.
2. The out come is the same. Your better off starting with a TJ as the value of an LJ are higher. Most of us agree that the 03 and up have the better interior.

the Brute kits are designed for the TJ platform, there would be too many frame changes to make with the LJ to complete the task..mind you, not impossible, but still a pain....
I used my LJ, and converted it with the Brute top, and by-passed the Brute bed option....
but if I were to do an actual Brute, yes, I would use the TJ....

I used the AEV BRUTE top, with an early Gr8top bulkhead....i cut the rollbar off on the rearward side, and my cabin area already had a Toys by Troy sport bar set-up with windshield dash bar....
i gutted the inside of the tub, prepped, and used Duplicolor's Bed Armor with Kevlar system to line the whole tub. i installed the bulkhead, and retained the ability to remove the top if i desire.....
the list of upgrades on my 44K mile unit is many, but i assure you this is my daily driver, and it gets wheeled frequently....
here are some shots of it without the KargoMaster rack/basket installed...

That looks great! I have been looking at the gr8tops system and comparing that system to the brute. I like the idea of not having to do so much work (of course) but I do not like the four piece window or the texture of the gr8top top. This compromise is pretty awesome. Did the brute top fit onto the bulkhead easily or did it have to be customized to fit?
I would also chop the rear roll bars and reinforce the cabs existing supports. That's what gives it the distinct classic truck look.

the underlip of the top actually has a 1 or 2 inch recesss, that will sit down over the bulkhead.....
the key is to make sure the bulkhead is sealed tightly to the tub on the sides and floor, to prevent water from getting in, also, i had to use sealant on the corners of the top where it rests on the tub lip, not much, but water could get in if i hadn't done it...
i am totally pleased with the outcome, and when i install my rack/basket, it really gives it a "back trails" looking rig.....
if you wish to know the list of mods, shoot me an email and i will be glad to share :)
or if you want more detailed pics of the top...

One big difference.
A TJ is rated to tow 2000lbs.
An LJ is rated to tow 3500lbs.
What do you need & which will be easier to sell!!

the TJ 2000# tow rating is because of the wheelbase. If you convert to a Brute system on the TJ platform, and use the appropriate springs for the lift, you will increase towing capacity......

Not exactly. If memory serves, it's also due to an extra rear crossmember that the LJ has *due* to it's longer wheelbase, but the Brute kit may come with that as well. So in a sense you really probably do end up with a 3,500 pound capacity.
Legally, however, you're still at 2,000 on a TJ. Break that and you can get in trouble. You're not likely to, but if you're in an accident and it's uncovered you were towing more than you were allowed and you're *really* in trouble.
Also note that TJ brakes suck, and they're gonna suck even more obviously with 3,500 pounds behind them. Sure, you *could* tow with a trailer that had brakes, but very few do up to that kind of limit.
AEV's 17" brake kit rocks, FWIW.

You are correct the only difference is wheelbase but count on DOT to simply read the rating on the plate. Manufactured with a 2000# rating is the only thing those anal boys will care about.
