Not really "parts discussion", but me and a couple of guys (possibly more) are heading out to Moab May 17-May 28 and wheeling at least from Sat, 5/19-Sat, 5/26.

Our preliminary plan is to run some of the slightly harder trails the first weekend (Rusty Nail, Golden Spike, Moab Rim ... possibly Pritchett), go backcountry 2-3 days (Beef Basin, White Rim, Shafer???), and then run some moderate trails later in the week. We may even throw in a MTB run down Porcupine Rim.

If you're going to be out there or want to come out and join up for the runs, feel free to post up or PM me.

Hope to meet some of you...

That sounds like the perfect "itinerary" for Moab!!! Wish I could make it but one year I'll do exactly that route! Best of luck and take plenty of pics!

What is your starting point?

I assume you're talking about the starting point of the entire trip ... For me personally: Asheville, NC.

I have a friend coming up from Charlotte who's going and another from Asheville who is going to ship his Rover and fly out to meet us. In addition, I have several friends in Boulder/Front Range who may join in along the way or for part or all of the trip and my Dad is going to hop over from LA mid-week.

You, or anyone, is welcome to join up and convoy if you like. :)

I just heard that Land Rover has moved its National Rally from May (at MOAB) to October because Johnny Depp is filming The Lone Ranger in Moab at that time, and there will be restricted access and all accommodations are full at that time as well.
You guys may want to check into that ... just in case. If you are camping and not on any of the restricted areas, you should be a-ok.

Comac90,

Have you bin to Moab before? I did the trip 2 years ago from PA. If this is your first time, I would strongly suggest you get a guide on the golden spike trail. Dan Mick is who you want. He made the the Golden spike trail. there is a lot of steep climbs that your Jeep can flip over on. If you need i can fill you in. I have pics posted in this section under Kevin's trip to Moab.

Interesting - I haven't heard that. We're rented a townhome (and our pick - tons available). We also just got permits to White Rim. I'll call tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Edit: just checked Solihull's site ... "THE RALLY DATES ARE: Tuesday October 2nd - Through Saturday October 6th, 2012. We apologize for the change of dates. Johnny Depp is filming a movie in Moab in June and the production had booked the available lodging." -It looks like we should be good.

Thanks, K! I appreciate that!

But, yes ... actually, I've spent somewhere around 70-80 days in Moab and have wheeled nearly every trail rated 8 or higher at least once (including Golden Spike). That was when I used to live in Boulder, CO, though, and had a trailer-queen-rockcrawler-D90, and a tow rig. :D

In fact, here is a video of one of my best, closest friends who I spent many days with in Moab (and on trails across the country) wheeling .... Upper Helldorado in his Range Rover buggy.... Tisdale on Upper Helldorado (http://m.youtube.com/?rdm=4ozmbjtfg&reload=3#/profile?desktop_uri=%2Fuser%2FECUELITE&sort=p&start=0&livestreaming_tutorial=False&ytsession=%7B%7D&channel_id=0&user=ECUELITE&gl=US&v=-WX3Re1ThFs).

Unfortunately, he passed away last summer after a battle with cancer (pretty inspiring story, however, of courage, faith, and pursuing your dreams). We had planned to try to qualify for King of the Hammers using the rig in the video with him driving and me navigating.

All that said, things are a bit tamer now that I'm running the JK and living on the east coast.;)
