View Full Version : PROCAL extended idle doesn't work
Hi AEV.
I bought my procal module direct from you folks (the very first one as I was told :D) and so far its been great. Tire size set, TPMS setting lowered, all is good. On those fronts I'm a very happy camper.
My problem is this: I cannot get the extended idle function to work in any way. I've set the dip switches as required(first two up, all others down), follow the directions as laid out in the guide and get..... nothing.
I've tried it in every variation of gear range, park - neutral, doors opened, doors closed, parking brake not set first - set first, etc and all have failed.
I hope you can help me out.
Thanks.

The correct order is:
Engine running
Ebrake set
Dimmer switch set to OFF or someone in the 5 position ramp (important)
ProCal plugged in with ExIdle switches set
Enjoy high idle :)
Now, if you're doing all that and it still isn't working there must be an issue. The high idle function calls a couple of Chrysler software routines, and those have their own set of requirements. The main requirements are that the car can not be moving or in gear, but there may be others I am not aware of. Out of curiosity have you done any mods to the door (light) defeat, esp, etc ?
If the procal is working at all, this function should work, it's an all or nothing system. Have you checked to make sure the dimmer is correctly set ?

Hey Jordan,
Any more clues on this? It seems like there are at least a handful of us now in the mysterious "no high idle" club.... I haven't given up hope

I ran into a guy that had a problem that caused an error (DTC) inside the PCM. It was seemingly unrelated but it was enough to cause the high idle to not initialize inside that PCM, that is the ProCal sent the right requests but was ignored by the PCM.
Do you know of anything not hooked up, broken, disabled with the vehicle ?
A normal scan tool might not be able to tell you about non-emissions dtcs, the dealer's StarScan or StarMobile might be the only way to figure out what's going on. If you do have a DTC I would love to know about it.
In the meantime, if you don't mind loosing your radio station pre-sets, you could try pulling the positive terminal on the battery and holding it to the negative terminal for 10-30 seconds, then let the battery remain unhooked for 5 minutes, plug it all back in, and then try it.

I had difficulties to make it work the first few time I tried. It started working after I changed the position of the dimmer switch. The trick is to change the position of the dimmer switch before inserting the procal unit. Doing the right sequence in the right order is key.

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead but, I just purchased my procal and I'm having the same issue. I was able to program the speedo and DRL's. I set the DIP switches to the extended idle combo and follow the guide to a T but nothing happens.
BTW it's a 2007 Rubicon Unlimited, Stock drivetrain.
Any guidance will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Benny

Hi all, I've had my AEV Procal since Dec '09 and just got it out this weekend to use the extended idle feature while airing up. I too couldn't get it to work according to the directions it came with. By doing a search, I found this thread and used Jordan's directions above and it worked like a charm. Very cool turning the dimmer switch and watching the idle rise to 2,000 RPM. This should significantly shorten my air up time.
Specifics:
'09 4Door Rubicon
I had my doors off, I'm using a dual (yellow top) battery setup, Procal already set gear ratio to 5.38, 37in tires and TPM is either off or really low cause I never get the low pressure light (I air down to 10psi on the trails.)
This feature is really useful and I will now be carrying my Procal in the bag with my compressor.

Is it possible to use the high idle function while in gear? I'm thinking that with the ebrake on just one or two clicks, which provides essentially no braking action, that the ProCal could be used to creep along at a slightly faster pace or up a slightly steeper incline.
