    Shackle Sizes & suggestions

    What size shackles are these?

Is there a particular brand and/or size people prefer?

Don't know if I should get 3/4" or 7/8". They run from $13.00 no name to $43.00 Warn shackles.

7/8" high strength alloy is the correct choice. Made in America, because Americans are better. Skookum is best, then Columbus McKinnon, Crosby, and Campbell. Crosby 7/8" G-209A is probably the best value/strength ratio. I believe that AEV has the 1" Crosby G-209 on their trucks but that shackle is not the best choice.

Buy the Skookum 7/8" 263 shackle if you want the best. Buy the Crosby G-209A, Columbus McKinnon M653A , or Campbell 5411495 if you cannot afford the best. Note that the Crosby G-209 and the Crosby G-209A are not the same.

Warn shackles are made in China and are a poor choice and poor value.

Also, you should note that even these 7/8" shackles are not rated to attach to a snatch block with a Warn 16.5 Ti winch. The snatch block effectively doubles the force on that part of the rigging if the lines are parallel. You would need one of the anchor shackles below.

      Skookum 1-1/8" 263
      CM 1-1/4" M656A
      Crosby 1-1/8" G-209A
      Campbell 1-1/4" 5412095

Perfect thanks. And, 1 1/8" - 1 1/4" shackles will fit in the AEV tow points?

No. The 1"+ shackles are not for the AEV tow points.

Get the larger anchor shackle just for a snatch block if you have one. Use the 7/8" anchor shackle for your bumper and the end of your winch line. If you never use a snatch block and never do a double line pull then you should never need the larger shackle

Many of the larger 15+ ton snatch blocks have a swiveling hook or shackle which would make purchase of an additional shackle unneccesary but if you had something like the Skookum 1000710 Tailboard Alloy Snatch Block you would need a shackle and the load rating of the 7/8" is not adequate.

                  Good info.

Quick question. If a snatch block is in use and the end of the winch rope is brought back to one of the shackles at the front of the truck, is the force doubled at that shackle? Or just at the one securing the shackle at the winch point?

                    double line pull

in a double line pull the force of the winch is DOUBLE @ the snatch block/anchor point.

So if you connected a strap, shackle and snatch block to a tree all of those components should be rated for DOUBLE the rating of the winch.

The force on each line of the winch, the one out of the winch to the snatch block and then the one from the snatch block back to the shackle on the truck bumper would max out @ the rating of the winch. Each of those lines would have 16.5k of tension with a warn 16.5. Add those up and the snatch block/anchor point have 33k pounds of tension.

                    HTH

We use the ARB large shackles. Not sure where they're made but have never seen/had/heard of any issues.

Dave... Any future plans for engineering lift kits and bumpers etc for the RAM 1500 platform? I just got a RAM Rebel and love it. The heavy duty 2500 platform are just a bit too much truck for my needs at the moment. I also have a JK350 setup on my Rubicon that I love. I hope to someday build up the 1500. I may have to trade up to a 2500 someday.

ARB Shackles and the referenced ARB207E are made in China. When it comes to shackles ARB is just a reseller. The do not manufacture the shackles. This ARB207E is a 1" nominal size shackle with an actual pin diameter of 1-3/32" and a load rating of 8-1/2 ton, which is not an actual rating or certification. It is essentially just whatever the Chinese chose to stamp on there. Whereas the made in USA shackles have actually been rated and certified. On the ARB product page there are three different load ratings listed; 1) 8-1/2 stamped on the shackle, 2) "18,700LB" in the title, 3) "19,000 lbs." in the description. This is potentially dangerous and does not lend confidence towards the product. Furthermore, because this is sold as an ARB shackle and it has an unclear load rating ARB is opening up themselves to potential liability.
