  • TJ Brute Recaro Aftermarket Seat Upgrade

Some of the AEV built Jeeps (112's and TJ Brutes) were delivered with upgraded seats. The aftermarket seats were made by Recaro and appeared to be the XL model with AEV logos and full power controls. The XL model (2.5x the price of Expert) is a motorsport variant and chock full of features including power adjustments, heating & cooling, high side bolsters, height adjustment and adjustable lumbar support.

The Recaro Expert M is another option which is less expensive (no power) and has a different suspension system than the XL Series with less lower lumbar support to leap over when getting in (climbing in). Expert M has lumbar adjustment plus extra lumbar pad with an available hand pump kit, tilt adjustment, extendable leg rest, adjustable headrest (height), and the wings adjust too. Clean up of vinyl is easy with a damp cloth.

    The Recaro Expert M specs:
    Weight: 35.3 lbs / 16 kg
    Max Height: 32.3 inches / 820 mm
Max Seat Cushion Depth: 21.5 inches / 545 mm
Max Seat Cushion Width: 20.5 inches / 520 mm
*Dimensions do not include mounting hardware

If you want either type just call Stefan at Griffen. They can sell you seats, adapters and perform the install too.

Griffen Motorwerke (US Distributor for Recaro for 20+years)
    Address: 1146 6th St, Berkeley, CA 94710
    Phone: (510) 524-7447

    Notes
    1) Griffen can order the slider adapters required to make the mount work on the TJ seat base (takes about one week)
    2) Spacers could be added to increase height - the Expert M is not height adjustable
    3) For a TJ Jeep you will need to swap out the passenger-side seat belt receiver with a driver-side seat belt receiver b/c the bend in the receiver won't make it past the corners of the seat
    4) The Vinyl covers are darker in color than the black leather covers
    5) Internal rollbars will reduce how far back a seat will slide (not news but heads up to the tall guys)
    6) Expert M width and height fits nicely into TJ Brute cabin (center console & door panels) but it is snug on the sides
    7) Griffen has the FULL line of Recaro in Stock

Here is a Recaro Expert M in black Vinyl. Griffin likes the Expert M for offroad applications. New Recaro seats come with a 2-year manufacturers warranty.

An exact replica of early AEV seats would mean purchasing the XL and then sending them to Alea Leather in Fremont for the stitching/logos - have not confirmed with them but they do that type of work.

Link to XL Model (they are 2x the price of Expert M model)

Great work compiling this info. Bravo,

IIRC, the older Audi S4s either came with, or had a factory option for, Recaro Style XL seats. When I lived near Atlanta, the Audi S4 seats would pop up on Craigslist from time to time and they were generally under $800 or so for both front seats. Black seemed to be the most common color. When I had my TJ I was knocking around the idea of picking up a set of these seats and retro fitting them into my Jeep via the correct adapters. I say this as I know the seats are very pricey when ordered new (again around $2k a piece I think - it's been awhile), so I was looking for a more affordable option. Occasionally the AEV-style XLs will surface on eBay and command a premium even on the secondhand market.

While watching Craigslist in Atlanta I saw a set of Recaro Orthopeds listed. I always thought they would have been an interesting swap. They look a little wide though, so I'm sure fitting them in a TJ would take some patience.

Price was worth it (ha) for the following! I really disliked my old seats.

        2 Seats
        2 Adapters
1 Driver Receiver (for passenger side)
        +Labor
        +Tax

They boxed up my old seats and hardware.

Pm me for price guidance/ranges. I hate to muddy up a good thread with money talk. I am sure it can be done for less. I think the Expert M will surprise you in terms of price, but the XL will really surprise you in the other direction. Let me put it another way - if you own the AEV 112 you have about $12k +/- of XL model seats (4) in your Jeep.

Joe, they look great! Nice job and nice find. I think my next TJ/Brute will probably have these too!

Since you have 4 of the XLs in your 112 why not try another right?

There was a vendor in the UK that was selling what looked like Cordura nylon seat covers for Recaros. I'll have to look around some and see if I can find the link.

Joe, how's the comfort and seat height compared to the MasterCrafts? I know I know, you didn't like the MAsterCrafts...

Bump: Joe, what did you do with your old mastercraft seats? I'm working on an LJ build and may be interested in upgrading to mastercraft or recaro seats based upon what my better half says about the stock seats.
