  • My 2013 JK wont accept the gear change.

    All,
I wrote the below to Jordan as well in a PM, but maybe someone here can help. Im in an unfortunate time sensitive situation, and facing 10+ hours worth of work if I cant fix this swapping axles again...

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I have seen where others have had the same issue as me, but the few things I found searching the web have not worked. I own 3 JKs, and I own Procals for all of them. In my 2014 JK I have the 3.73 axles and a rear locker. My plan was to switch axles with my 2013 JK that has 3.21 open gears. I swapped the axles and used my procals (previously used only for TPMS and Tire size) to reset the axle ratio on both. The 2014 now with 3.21 gears is fine - no CEL, no warnings, drives fine. The 2013 is not taking the setting. I get the 2 honks, but its not working. It drives and shifts fine the first 20 feet, then goes into limp mode, and I only have 2nd (maybe 3rd too) gear. Its nearly immediate. When I check the codes, its a "gear 1 incorrect ratio". I tried setting it to 4.10, and 3.55 as well, and then back to 3.73. I tried resetting the procal back to default and unlocking it, and setting it again. I tried something I saw on a forum where I unhooked the battery for 20 minutes, unhooked the ECM, hooked up the battery, hooked up the ECM, then tried to codes again, then unhook the battery again for 20 mins. That's an hour of my life Ill never get back.

Im hoping you can help. If I don't have this sorted by Friday I have to spend my Saturday (4/18/15) flipping the axles back again since my 2014 will be sold next week. Please help!

The procal on the 2013 that isn't working right is serial#304-------- if that helps. This same procal did set the TPMS down to 28psi, and the tiresize fixed the speedo fine when I went to 33" tires last year. It just wont take the axle setting.

Have your tried one of the other 2 procals? This could eliminate a problem with the third.

That's a good idea - I did briefly think about that, but I was worried about potential issues then with those 2 jeeps.

My wife is only driving around town this week, so she can drive around in 2nd gear limp mode to get where she needs to go.... I have to go on the highway to get to work, and don't have another vehicle to drive if for some reason I couldn't set it back. the other is my daughters - and Heaven forbid if I messed up her Jeep.

Tiresize and the speedo being incorrect is one thing - but this gear change is much more traumatic. I don't really want to risk messing up one of the other jeeps.

But thanks. Push comes to shove, I would rather buy another one to test with. Im hoping that Jordan or someone else at AEV or here can help so I don't have to switch the axles back - that was a PIA with floorjacks and jack stands....

Its just so weird that the 2014 worked and the 2013 didn't.... Im just hoping its a firmware version or something and I need an updated one.... Come on AEV! Need your help!

What about taking it to a dealer and see if they can change the setting using a Star Scan tool. They should be able to do that, and not charge you a fortune. That would be easier than swapping the axles back and forth.

Anyone know if that is the case? Ive seen multiple people say they have even had dealers install gears and cant flash the 2013s correctly. The recommendation in that thread was to use a Procal.

Anyone know the typical rate/time on that - and the implications to warranty? I don't want a local dealer getting all righteous and flagging my VIN in the computer.... Has anyone actually done this and been successful?

          Thanks again for the responses!

Like Don said I would find a dealer that is "mod" friendly and have them reset. There could be a code in the system keeping the setting from going through. I've never had a problem with a Pro Cal setting once the horn confirmed it. Don's been through a lot of these scenarios with many Jeep's and gives good advice.

Just to follow up, I did call AEV tech support yesterday, talked to Jordan. He sent me some things to try and it worked perfectly. Word to the wise. If you are going to change gears, make sure u use the procal before you drive the vehicle. Once the check engine light sets the error, it gets stuck and won't take the new setting.

AEV and Jordan are awesome, thanks for all your help.

Update (yes 7 years later) - I had someone reach out that found this post and had the same problem and asked what the actual fix was. Below is what I got from Jordan at AEV and it worked for me - follow it exactly - including the 2 hours thing! Figured I would put it here just for anyone else that stumbles on this thread in the future!

Sure, below are the instructions from AEV. follow them, make sure u really disconnect for the 2 hours. Good luck.

Ok, so you already have an error in the system because you moved the vehicle BEFORE doing the procal. That will need to be cleared before the car will run correctly. Follow these steps and let me know if there are any issues:

(turn the key TWO CLICKS in to the RUN setting, where all the lights are ON in the dash but do not start the engine)

                    1. Program a ratio you do NOT have with the Procal, 3.73 or something

                    2. Program your correct gear ratio

                    3. Use the Procal to Clear DTCs (it’s under Engine Functions)

                    4. Disconnect the + Battery cable for at least two hours

                    5. Hook the battery back up

                    6. Repeat Steps 1, 2, and 3.

                    7. Test Drive.
