  • 52nd Annual TDS Desert Safari

Spent last weekend at the 52nd annual TDS Desert Safari in the Truckhaven hills area about three miles West of the Salton Sea. http://www.tds4x4.com/ This is the largest off road rally in the Southwestern US. While the weather thinned the crowd a bit this year, there were still thousands of attendees in hundreds of RV's with just about every kind of off road vehicle that you could think of. The vendor area and obstacle coarse where as fun as ever and the fireworks show Saturday night was impressive. While you wouldn't want to explore this area in the Summer, the Truckhaven hills area is one of my favorite places to wheel. Should definitely be on your bucket list if you ever get out to Southern Cal.

Now I remember. Your vehicle was the one with four tires and a pair of headlights. You should have stopped and said hello.

Thousands of attendees? Too many bodies cramming into one place for my off-road/camping tastes. Great scenery, though.

Am I wrong, or is the Discount Tire truck a Brute DC with a custom bed?

We camp away from the event, it's hands down one of the best events in the country.

                      Not a brute btw

It was custome built by Off Road Evolution, not by AEV, so I am sure there are quite a few differences.

The Truckhaven Hills area where TDS is held every year covers a lot of desert. You'd be surprised how fast that many vehicles can get dispersed. There are times when a group of people stop to watch some crazy hill climb and other times when you find yourself all alone. There are also several main staging areas that are sponsored by companies like Discount Tire. They give out water, sodas, hot dogs, candy, and various swag. These areas can get crowed, but it's also a fun place to check out all the different vehicles. TDS also has a really good vendor area and obstacle coarse. That and the fact that they raise a lot of money to help keep the desert open to off road vehicles, make it a yearly event on my calendar.

The RESQ1 vehicle was a custom build. They took a stock JKU and chopped it up. You can see the complete build on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD_PMWZIFes There are 4-5 episodes of the entire build. You can also find various videos of the different runs that RESQ1 has been on. It's an impressive vehicle, but it's big and heavy and that has been a problem on some of the runs.

I was out there as well. My Jeep club camped out and braved the 65 to 70MPH windstorm that hit the area. It was nice when the winds died down on Saturday, we all had a terrific time. Good Times!
